DBA Application Statement Sample
I earned my MBA at XXXX University and now hope to continue to study in your wonderful program where I feel most at home and earn the terminal degree in my field, the Doctor of Business Administration, DBA. I have experienced a supportive yet highly challenging academic environment at XXXX and I am convinced that XXXX University is where I could most excel in a doctoral program. I am most impressed by the quality of your doctoral in Business Adminstration Program at XXXX University both with respect to content and the excellent faculty - particularly the breadth of the core and major curriculums. I also appreciate the great diversity among my colleagues and the opportunity to expand my network at XXXX University.
I look forward to the opportunity to continue to cultivate an ethic of service as an integral part of my professional advancement and in this way make my foremost contribution to the business community. I hope to become an expert consultant for businesses and brands, helping them to achieve recognition, loyalty, and to expand their potential and reach new heights. I have also set my mind to continue research and teach others who seek to excel in this complex, fascinating, and rapidly evolving field.
Coming from a hardworking middle-class family, I grew up seeing my father working very hard to sustain our family business of manufacturing leather goods. Working at one of his stores throughout my senior year in high school sparked that entrepreneurial mindset and the curiosity of business mechanism in me. I recognized that we could reach a certain sales volume, but never excelled to the next level. It was not until college that I established that we lacked a proper brand to dominate the market competition. Always longing to be a leading part of something bigger than the limits I had been confined in my whole life, I set my mind on pursuing a career in marketing.
I took the first step as a Social Media Associate, progressed to Marketing Assistant Manager and finally became Brand Manager after 7 years of fruitful experience. As Brand Manager, I constantly pushed to develop and refine elements of the salon’s brand, as well as to ensure a positive relationship between the customers and the brand. Innovations within this position included re-establishing the salon’s new brand concept to promote city-wide recognition and consumers’ loyalty. In 2015 when I began the Rewards Loyalty Program, we achieved the record of 75% customer retention rate within the first three months of implementation. In 2016, I strategized and launched the biggest sales promotion of the year “You’re the Artist”, allowing customers to freely design their own nails and compete against each other via social media. The promotion was successful, yielding $255,000 gross revenue with an 86% contribution margin. I have been trying to find new exciting ways to propel the business offerings to the top and enhance our market position. My successes to date have been achieved by applying determination, diligence, and intellectual curiosity to exceptional degrees. I took to heart a quotation from Babe Ruth: ‘It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up’. This sums up my attitude to challenges of any kind from the most difficult to the most routine. I apply doggedness together with a highly positive and optimistic attitude, which has served me well and is what I always try to instill in those I mentor.
My passion, throughout my university time in both Vietnam and America, continued to be Digital and Social Media Marketing and Analytics. As digitization revolutionizes marketing strategy, I am fascinated by the ways in which the global emergence of social networking, new customer monitoring tools, and smart devices have helped in data collection and revolutionized the modes of communication by which businesses and brands engage with consumers. I am eager to initiate research and initiate new models that effectively recognize consumer perception to develop effective online marketing strategies. The key question that I seek to answer is: ‘How do we systematically create and evaluate marketing strategies by applying more science and data analytics into our predictive modeling?’
Finally, with determination, dedication, and perseverance, I intend to become a worthy candidate for the DBA program by accumulating knowledge in the field, planning for future research initiatives, and cultivating groundbreaking models of marketing for global businesses. An excellent academic record coupled with a successful career in Marketing will allow me to excel rather than merely succeed in the program.
Thank you in advance for reviewing my credentials and considering my application.
The Importance of Socially Responsible Business Practices
At the center of my own interest in business stands the concept of ‘socially responsible’ business practices. Over the course of the last 15 years or so that I have been dedicated full time to drafting personal statements or statements of purpose for admission to programs of advanced study, the importance of business, particularly large corporations, assuming responsibility for their actions and actively promoting community responsibility, even progressive social advancement, has become widely recognized. This is now the new mainstream line of thinking in the business world: what is good for the community, in short, is also good for business. As a result, if I were to help you with your statement for admission to a business program, I would do everything that I could to portray you as someone who would be a highly responsible member of the business community, someone who is highly sensitive to social issues and the importance of the business community giving something back to the broader society.
Business & Ethics
As someone with a PHD in Religion and Social Ethics, I have long been most interested with the aspects of corporate governance which fall generally under the category of 'social responsibility'. I am committed to encouraging high quality interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching in practical and professional ethics by educators and practitioners who appreciate the theoretical and practical impacts of their subjects. I seek to promote ethical practices in business and advocate the need for ethics as part of business courses, providing a forum for ethicists to discuss and exchange ideas on teaching, training and consulting in the field of business ethics.

Executive MBA Program, Military Officer, Sample 1st Paragraph
I currently have 8 years of military service and serve as an officer in the United States Army. Now that I have completed two lengthy deployments, I have decided to transition into the Reserves and little by little make my military service part-time. If accepted into your world class Executive MBA Program at the University of XXXX, I will be able to fulfill my long term goal of managing civilian business with the US Armed Forces.
MBA Hospitality Personal Statement, Chinese Applicant
XXXX University is my first choice among MBA Programs in Hospitality because of the focus of your program, which will allow me to concentrate much of my attention to the subjects of both Hospitality and Real Estate. I feel that I have demonstrated my ability to excel since I have a strong undergraduate background not only in Hospitality and Real Estate but also Accounting, Finance, and Human Resources.
I look forward to contributing to the diversity of your MBA Program at XXXX University as a very hard-working student from China who continuously makes the Dean’s List and lives for discussions of global issues in Tourism and Real Estate Development. I will graduate next month, December of 2016, with my BS in Hospitality Management and I have so far maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.64. Currently enrolled in an Advanced Seminar in Strategic Hospitality Management, I am ready to hit the ground running in your program and give it my all, learning as much as I can about: Hotels and Restaurants, Events Operation and Planning, Casinos, Real Estate Sales, and especially Marketing and Finance.
I feel that I am a strong candidate for your MBA Program not only as a result of having distinguished myself as an undergraduate student but also the fact that I have earned certification in Food Safety, Real Estate, and ServSafe Alcohol. After completing your program, I look forward to working for a major corporation for many years in both the US and China and will eventually make my permanent home in China. Travel stands near the top of my list of favorite things to do and I hope to have the opportunity to travel as part of my professional range of activities as a global MBA. I have already visited numerous cities in the United States – most prominently San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and NYC - and also went to Spain as part of our Study Abroad Program where I especially enjoyed Barcelona. As a Chinese man, the opportunity to spend significant amounts of time in Japan and Korea also contributed in special ways to the enrichment of my Asian identity and the broadening of my cultural horizons. I see the unique, cutting-edge MBA Program with a focus on Hospitality at XXXX University as the optimal platform for launching a distinguished career in the business of international hospitality and hotel real estate. Seeking the fullest of immersions in the gambit of executive business competencies, professional leadership strategies, and creative thinking skills in business, I look forward to also graduating with a solid foundation in business and professional ethics and corporate social responsibility in the global business environment, along with an advanced sensitivity to hospitality challenges that tend to present themselves as a result of cultural differences.
I have completed several internships in the hospitality sector and worked in many hotels, serving as everything from Guest Room Attendant and Front Desk Manager Assistant to Sales and Marketing and Events Operation, since I have advanced Audio/Video skills that my supervisors were eager to put to good use. These experiences have given me a great opportunity to develop an in-depth familiarity with many facets of hotel operations. I have now been in the United States for eight years and have developed heightened cross-cultural awareness and adaptability at the same to time that I have continued to perfect my communication skills in English.
Participating in many student organizations, including the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, I served as Event Chair for the Elite League of Hospitality in Asia and also helped out the Penn State Catering Society as Front House Manager Assistant and Treasurer. Raising funds for THON, a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer, was another special highlight.
I thank you for considering my application to what I see as the finest Hospitality and Real Estate MBA Program in the world, at XXXX University.

Women in Business
Heroines of Business
You might not realize just how many big companies are the brainchild of female minds. There are some really cool startups and businesses founded by women. Here are our favorites and the women behind them.
Build-A-Bear Workshop
Maxine Clark came up with Build-A-Bear Workshop after shopping with a 10-year-old who questioned why she couldn't just make her own stuffed toy when she couldn't find one she liked. Clark turned the idea into a business when she opened the first Build-A-Bear Workshop in St. Louis in the late 90s.
There are more than 400 stores worldwide now. They have helped people create more than 100 million furry friends. Clark, who remains the company's "Chief Executive Bear," was inducted into the Junior Achievement National Business Hall of Fame in 2006. She was named one of the 25 Most Influential People in Retailing by Chain Store Age in 2008.
True&Co
True&Co founder Michelle Lam has cracked the code to finding the perfect bra by creating an algorithm that helps women find the best bras for their size and shape. It also enables them to design better fitting bras by using data from more than one million women. True&Co has raised $6 million since its beginnings in 2012.
Sols
Kegan Schouwenburg, cofounder and CEO of Sols, got the idea for her startup Sols back when she worked at 3D printery Shapeways. She was walking around the factory floor in her black leather platform boots and had a stunning idea: 3D prints of orthopedic shoe insoles.
The startup has raised $19.3 million in total from investors including Grape Arbor VC, FundersGuild, Felicis Ventures, Rothenberg Ventures, RRE Ventures, Lux Capital, and Founders Fund.
Popforms
Kate Matsudaira, Popforms' founder has an email newsletter packed with career advice, a blog, and a set of courses that are all intended to make you the best technical leader you can be.
Stitch Fix
Katrina Lake, founder and CEO of Stitch Fix, is the founder and CEO of Stitch Fix, a personal styling website. Users fill out a survey about their taste, and Stitch Fix's personal stylists curate five items of clothing and accessories that fit their budget, lifestyle, and taste. You can buy the items you want and return the ones you won´t use. Stitch Fix has raised $46.8 million to date. It most recently raised a $30 million Series C round in June 2014 from Benchmark, Western Technology Investment, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Baseline Ventures.
Flickr
In 2002, and at age 35, Caterina Fake, who had worked as the art director for Salon.com, founded the popular photo-sharing website Flickr. The site was actually an offshoot of a game that Fake was developing with Stewart Butterfield, her husband at the time.
The game quickly went bust, but the photo-sharing technology they designed was a hit. In 2005, Fake and Butterfield sold Flickr to Yahoo for $35 million in cash and stock options.
Fake has since co-founded the website Hunch, which makes recommendations based on detailed user preferences. She has also been named to the board of directors of the handmade online marketplace Etsy.
Liquid Paper
Liquid Paper was the brainchild of executive secretary Bette Nesmith Graham. In the 1950s, she began using white, water-based tempera paint and a thin paintbrush to cover her typing errors. She sold her first bottle, originally named Mistake Out, in 1956. Graham later patented this cool office product and renamed it Liquid Paper.
After selling just 100 bottles a month, Liquid Paper began selling 25 million bottles a year when Graham sold it for a reported $47.5 million in 1979. She passed away six months later at age 56.
Ruth's Chris Steak House
After a varied career in teaching and horse training, Ruth Fertel mortgaged her house in 1965 to buy a little restaurant, Chris Steak House, on the corner of Broad and Ursuline in New Orleans.
A fire consumed the restaurant in 1976, forcing her to open in a new location. She changed the name to Ruth's Chris Steak House.
That same year, Fertel agreed to let a regular called Tom Moran open the first Ruth's Chris franchise location. Today, there are more than 130 company and franchise-owned locations around the world.
Fertel, who passed away in 2002 aged 75, sold her majority interest in the chain to private equity firm Madison Dearborn in 1999 for an undisclosed amount.
Proactiv
Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields were classmates studying dermatology together at Stanford University. They felt strongly about finding a better treatment for acne because both of them had lived with it at some time in their lives.
After starting separate practices, the pair noticed the problems acne posed for people of all ages and the need for a new approach. This led them to start working on a new way to treat facial blemishes.
Over a five-year period, Rodan and Fields developed a comprehensive acne skin care system, Proactiv Solution. It combines acne medicine with soothing botanicals to create an acne-fighting system designed to leave skin smooth, clean and clear. The product, which has found success via 30-minute television infomercials, has become one of the top-selling acne medications in the U.S.A. to date.
Luzme
Rachel Willmer had just bought an e-reader before going on vacation in 2008. But she quickly stumbled across some problems while trying to load books onto the reader. Some stores didn't carry the right format for her e-reader. Some were too expensive. Others wouldn't sell her a book because she was in a different country.
Luzme solves e-book woes by letting you sign up for the books you want from the stores you want. It then emails you when the price drops on books you want. Luzme hasn't raised any funding money as yet.
Hitlist
Gillian Morris, Hitlist's founder, set up a company that lets you build wishlists of places you want to travel to.
When there are fare deals for those places, Hitlist will send you an alert so you can buy tickets cheaply. There's a social aspect to Hitlist, too: you connect via Facebook and can see where your friends are planning trips.
Founded by Gillian Morris and built by her startup TripCommon, Hitlist is competing against apps like Kayak and HotelTonight.
Fittr
Fittr helps you reach your fitness goals. Whether you're a gym rat with an everyday regimen or a couch potato looking to get some exercise, you can tell Fittr how in shape you are and enter tags like "apartment" or "lifting" to let the app know how much equipment you're working with.
Fittr is available via the App Store. There is a five-day free trial, but you have to pay $11.99 for the full version of the app. It raised an undisclosed seed round of funding in August from nonprofit Tampa Bay WaVE.
Hobnob
Sending digital invitations for an event is hard at this point in time. If you use Facebook's event feature, your invites could get lost in the shuffle and e-vites are kind of boring and old-school, but not in a good way. Hobnob solves that problem by letting you drop event details into one of their pretty templates and then send them out to friends via text message. Hobnob was founded in 2014 and hasn't raised any venture capital funding yet.
