APNP Goal Statement, Military, Correctional

November 30, 2013

Why are you interested in this program?

As a nurse I have witnessed the enormously beneficial effects of the intervention of APNP’s in the lives of patients suffering both acute and chronic symptoms of mental ill-health. I seek to emulate their effectiveness.

In my work as a nurse in a correctional institution and in the military environment in which I live as a military spouse as well as a soldier, I have had an unusual amount of exposure to mental ill-health challenges and their frequently distressing consequences. My experiences, coupled with a short but painful personal episode of post-natal depression has crystallized in me a desire to acquire the knowledge and skills to become an APNP.

  1. What are your career goals upon obtaining your degree?

My goal is to assist in improving mental health in an active military setting where there is a pressing need for specialist military psychiatric nurses in view of the particular stresses suffered by soldiers and veterans together with their spouses and families.

  1. Additional Information.

I am an experienced RN and a significant amount of that experience has involved patients suffering mental ill-health. I want to be in a position to help them as much as possible and seek the training and knowledge to do so. I strongly believe that I possess the characteristics that would enable me to be a first class APNP.
